How a £100K deal made me feel

Hi Reader

Last month was really exciting for Kat Irwin Design. An opportunity surfaced which left me feeling very excited but also very small…

One of my clients has an idea with a lot of potential.

Last year we started bringing it to life, hiring some recommended developers who did not deliver. After a few chaotic months of ignored messages and late deliveries, we decided to re-strategise.

I contacted an old friend with an established web development agency, working with businesses like the World Health Organisation. It was clear from the get-go what a huge upgrade this was.

They were invested in making the idea succeed, not just building a website. That’s why, when they quoted £100K for the project my client didn’t even blink an eye at the price.

Don’t design websites, solve problems.

I then realised what a huge opportunity this was for me. To work alongside such an experienced team - even if I wasn’t being paid I would jump at this opportunity. But then I started feeling strange…

Throughout my career, my colleagues have always been older, wiser, more experienced, more outspoken, more male. I always felt small in those rooms, even though I deserved to be there.

After years of overcoming this feeling here it was, back again. Feeling small with this huge opportunity in my hands. It was unexpected. Why did I feel scared rather than excited? And insecure rather than proud?

I know this means that I’m growing, but by definition, shouldn’t growth make you feel bigger? 🤔

Finally, I had to remind myself that growth is not always about feeling bigger - it's about finding strength in our vulnerability and pushing through even when we don’t feel confident.

If any of this resonates with you please hit reply - I’d love to chat. (Even just for the reassurance that I’m not crazy 😂 )

How have you overcome unexpected feelings while growing your business?

Until next time, have a wonderful week!
Kat 🪴

👋 Hi Reader Recently someone booked a discovery call with me. And when I read the responses to the pre-call questions, I almost cancelled. There were a lot of specific instructions. And a tight deadline. I could already feel that this project could be a nightmare… But I thought I’d give the call a go anyway - I could always say no. On the call, they seemed kind - stressed, but reasonable. So I decided to gently set some boundaries and explain that while I absolutely respect her input, she...

👋 Hi Reader Freelancing gets easier when you know who you are. When I first started freelancing as a UX Designer, I thought I had to fit into a box - minimal, slick and corporate. Not me at all. And this made it impossible to find clients. I had no idea how to even start a conversation, let alone sell to them. But then, after taking steps to find my focus it all changed. Now, 4 years later, I work with clients that I enjoy speaking to, on projects that get me excited. And you can too... I’ve...
